What does the Image to WebP converter do?

WebP is an image format developed by Google that gives smaller files than JPG and PNG for the same visual quality. Google's own studies found lossy WebP files about 25–34% smaller than comparable JPGs, and lossless WebP about 26% smaller than PNGs. Every major browser supports it today.

Smaller images mean faster pages, and faster pages mean better user experience and better Core Web Vitals scores, which Google uses as a ranking signal. Converting your images to WebP is one of the easiest speed wins available.

This tool converts your images with two modes. Lossy mode (the default) is right for photos: set the quality, with 75–85 giving a good balance. Lossless mode keeps every pixel exactly, which suits logos, icons, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges or text. Transparent backgrounds are kept in both modes.

How to use WebP images on your website

On WordPress, you can upload WebP files directly to the media library (WordPress has supported WebP since version 5.8). Image optimisation plugins can also convert your existing library automatically and serve WebP to supporting browsers.

On a custom site, use the picture element to serve WebP with a JPG fallback, and always set width and height attributes on images so the layout doesn't shift while they load. Lazy-load images below the fold with loading="lazy", but not your main hero image, which should load immediately.

Converting images is only one part of page speed. Render-blocking scripts, slow hosting and unoptimised fonts often matter just as much. If your speed scores stay low after converting images, run our website speed test to see what else is slowing the page down.

Online stores benefit most. Category pages can show dozens of product photos, and converting them to WebP can cut the page weight dramatically. Faster category and product pages mean shoppers see products sooner, bounce less and are more likely to add to cart, and Google can crawl more of your catalogue in the same time.

Is it safe to upload my files?

Your files are processed on our own server, not sent to any third-party service, and are deleted automatically 30 minutes after processing. We strip location data from photos when converting them, and we never use your files for anything else.
